With diverse ecological habitats, New South Wales contains temperate rainforests on the east coast and Dividing Range, and drier eucalypt woodlands to semi-arid lands in the west. There are a number of areas where there is a cross-over of dry land birds and moist climate birds, making for excellent birding – and long lists!

The rare Rockwarbler in NSW’s only endemic bird, and other specialties include Superb Lyrebird, the endangered Regent Honeyeater, Superb Fairy-wren, Barking and Powerful Owls, and Bush Stone-curlew. Further north, and close to the coast are Logrunner, Regent Bowerbird and Eastern Bristlebird, and woodland regions can produce Crested Bellbird, Hall’s Babbler and Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush.

Southern Queensland’s eucalypt forests, woodlands, grasslands, scrub, rainforests, heaths and wetlands hold a great number of species with specialties such as Albert’s Lyrebird, Paradise Riflebird, Logrunner, Red Goshawk, Pacific Baza, Black-breasted Button-quail and Eyrean Grasswren.

Northern Queensland has a count of around 490 species and its wet tropics produce a great range of rainforest specialties including Golden Bowerbirds and Southern Cassowary. The dry areas produce Brolga and Sarus Crane, Black-throated Finch, and Gouldian Finch may be seen here. Unique to this area are Palm Cockatoo, Golden-shouldered Parrot, Yellow Honeyeater, Atherton Scrubwren, Fernwren, and seasonally, the beautiful Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher. Of course, you will want to view Pied Imperial-Pigeons, Victoria’s Riflebird, Chowchilla, Catbird, and Macleay’s Honeyeater.

South Australia offers some 450 species of birds. Habitats range from the dry red interior to the lush and green Mt Lofty Ranges; wetlands and mangroves around Adelaide and estuaries in the Coorong, floodplains along the Murray River, woodlands and tidal flats of Kangaroo Island, vast expanses of the famous semi-arid mallee, and outback deserts with spectacular mountain ranges.

Forests still cover almost half of the island state of Tasmania, and the mix of heathlands, dry and wet eucalypt forests, and buttongrass moorlands provide diverse habitats for a range of species, including 12 endemic species.

The sought-after but elusive Forty-spotted Pardelote is found in the southeast of Tasmania, and throughout Tasmania are Green Rosella, Dusky Robin, Scrubtit, Brown and Tasmanian Thornbills, Black Currawong and Black-headed, Yellow-throated and Strong-billed Honeyeaters.

The endangered Orange-bellied Parrot is found in the southwest, but is difficult to find. Little Penguin, and well as visitors such as Rockhopper, King, Macaroni and Gentoo Penguins.
